What Is Holistic Health? The 7 Dimensions of Wellness

We often think of wellness as simply "not being sick." But holistic health goes far beyond the absence of illness — it's a dynamic balance between different areas of our lives that, together, shape how we truly feel. This is the idea behind the 7 dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and occupational. When these dimensions are aligned, we don't just feel good — we thrive. At Ecolirios Lodge, a boutique wellness retreat in Costa Rica nestled in the Caribbean rainforest, we built our entire experience around this idea. Every corner of our 100+ hectare property — from the spa to the trails and our rooms — was designed to nurture more than one dimension of wellness at a time. Here's what each dimension means, and how you can experience it during your stay.

1. Physical wellness

Physical wellness is the dimension most people think of first: movement, rest, nutrition, and how well we care for our bodies. It’s not about achieving a fitness goal — it’s about feeling strong, energized, and in tune with your body.

At Ecolirios, physical wellness feels like a sunrise hike through the rainforest, a dip in our natural spring-fed pools, or simply falling asleep to the sound of the river instead of city noise. Our spa and sauna experiences are designed to help your body recover and reset, while our organic, locally-sourced cuisine at Raíces Restaurant nourishes you from the inside out.

2. Emotional wellness

Emotional wellness is the ability to understand, process, and express your feelings in a healthy way. It’s about resilience, self-awareness, and giving yourself permission to slow down.

There’s a reason so many guests describe their stay at Ecolirios as «emotionally restorative.» Disconnecting from screens and schedules, and reconnecting with birdsong and rainforest silence, creates space for genuine emotional rest — something that’s increasingly hard to find in daily life. Our rooms, while equipped with Wi-Fi, have no televisions, screens, or tablets, inviting guests to step away from routine and reconnect with themselves.

3. Social wellness

Social wellness refers to the quality of our relationships and our sense of connection and belonging. Meaningful time with a partner, family, or friends — free from distractions — is one of the most underrated forms of wellness.

Our boutique format (no more than 10 suites and villas) means you’re never lost in a crowd. Whether it’s a shared meal at our Raíces Restaurant, a cooking class, or simply relaxing together surrounded by nature, Ecolirios creates the intimacy needed for real connection.

4. Spiritual wellness

Spiritual wellness doesn’t necessarily have to do with religion — it’s about having a sense of purpose, values, and connection to something greater than yourself. For many, that connection is found in nature.

Surrounded by more than 100 hectares of rainforest, rivers, and waterfalls, guests at Ecolirios often describe a renewed sense of perspective. A guided sunrise walk, quiet time by the river, practicing yoga on your room’s balcony, or simply watching the forest wake up with birdsong can be a deeply grounding, almost meditative experience.

5. Intellectual wellness

Intellectual wellness means staying curious, engaged, and open to learning. It’s the dimension we activate when we explore something new — a place, a culture, a skill.

Costa Rica’s biodiversity offers no shortage of intellectual stimulation. A night tour, a sunset horseback ride, or a cooking class exploring Costa Rican ingredients all invite guests to learn something new about the world — and about themselves.

6. Environmental wellness

Environmental wellness is about the relationship between our surroundings and our wellbeing — and it’s at the very core of who we are. As a sustainable lodge in Costa Rica, Ecolirios was built with deep respect for the ecosystem it belongs to, minimizing our ecological footprint while maximizing the guest’s connection to nature.

Staying in a place that values sustainability isn’t just good for the planet — it’s good for you too. Studies consistently show that time in nature, clean air, and natural light have measurable benefits for mental and physical health.

7. Occupational wellness

Occupational wellness is the sense of satisfaction and purpose we get from what we do — and, just as importantly, our ability to step away from it when we need to. In a hyperconnected world, true rest from work is rare.

Ecolirios was designed as a place to fully disconnect: limited connectivity, no city noise, and an environment that makes it easy to put the phone down. Guests consistently tell us that a stay here helps them return to work with more clarity and energy than a typical vacation.

Finding balance: A holistic approach to wellness

The difference between health and wellness is that health is often a state, while wellness is a practice, made up of these seven interconnected dimensions. You don’t need to master all of them at once. But choosing a place that supports several dimensions at the same time — physical, emotional, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and occupational — makes the path toward balance much easier.

That’s the philosophy behind every experience at Ecolirios Lodge: a wellness retreat in Costa Rica where the rainforest itself becomes part of your care.
