Wildlife Monitoring at Ecolirios: Camera Traps in Our Nature Reserve.

Nestled in the vibrant nature of the Costa Rican countryside, the Boutique Hotel is dedicated to providing a unique lodging experience that aligns with the environment and actively supports the conservation of local biodiversity. One of our primary tools for this effort is the camera traps, strategically placed in our private reserve of 120 hectares, with elevations ranging from 600 to 900 meters above sea level.

What are camera traps?

Camera traps are photographic devices with motion and heat sensors that are automatically activated when they detect the presence of an animal. They operate day and night, without disturbing the natural behavior of wildlife. This technology allows us to record images and videos of wild species in their natural habitat without direct human intervention.

Why do we use them?

At Ecolirios, we believe that conservation begins with knowledge. Through camera trap monitoring, we can:
– Identify the fauna present in the reserve, including endemic or endangered species.
– Observe behavioral patterns, feeding habits, and animal movement.
– Detect ecological changes over time.
– Promote environmental education among our visitors and the community.

What species have we recorded?

Thanks to these cameras we have captured unique moments of animals that inhabit the rainforest of our property. Among the most outstanding are:

The elusive ocelot (Leopardus pardalis).
Collared peccaries, traveling in groups along the nature trails (Crax Rubra).
(Crax Rubra) Pava toucans and trogons, in full diurnal activity.
(Tapirus bardii) Tapir.
(Eira barbara) Tolomuco.
Various species of frogs, reptiles and small nocturnal mammals.
