Ecolirios: An out of the way destination worth getting to.

It’s impossible to talk about the wonder of Ecolirios Hotel Boutique and Villas without talking about the region where it’s situated. The heart and soul of this beautiful, remote, property is both its location in the province of Limón in the rural foothills of Turrialba Volcano, and the vision of the owners in creating a magical environment that enhances and showcases the natural beauty of this lesser-known area of Costa Rica. I’ve lived in this region for ten years, and I’ve come to love it for the local culture, the friendly people, and for the amazing biodiversity and beauty surrounding us. Ecolirios captures all of this unique spirit in one mountain property.
The adventure begins in the journey to Ecolirios. We live about 20 miles from the hotel, and our trip consists of a ten-minute ride on the main highway and then a thirty-minute ride up the winding mountain road, watching happily as the car temperature gauge now and then lowers a degree and the road opens up to breathtaking views of the pristine valley below. The tropical lowlands region of the Caribbean side of Costa Rica is known for its warm temps, high humidity, lush rainforests, and banana and pineapple plantations.
For those who come to Limon province from the capital city, the main highway snakes its way down from the highlands through the heart of 100,000-acre Braulio Carillo National Park. It is clear within 20 minutes of leaving the metropolitan area—you are entering into a unique and special part of the country. This province, far from the well-known tourist areas that are so popular here, has so much to offer for those who like to get off the beaten path. And one of our favorite places to get away is just up the mountain from us.
We love so many things about Ecolirios. The owners have committed to building a high-end, eco-friendly destination that is a part of its environment, using the lush natural surroundings to enhance the property instead of altering the landscape. Committed to sustainability, the attention to detail can be seen in every building and architectural touch, from the cozy one-room bungalow suites nestled into the rainforest above the river’s edge, to the large villas that sit atop the property and look out on the region. In the jungle suites, Capuchin monkeys pass by.
Toucans bounce from tree branch to tree branch. The high-end food served at the restaurant is world-class with a local touch. The staff treats us as family. There is a feeling in the restaurant, and all over the property, that this is a place for slowing down. A place to stop our busy lives, breath in the clear mountain air, and relax. When we go, we always walk to the river and across the glass bridge that connects the main part of the property to the mountain trails that lead to a lovely waterfall or up towards the peak of Turrialba Volcano.
We saunter through the beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding the restaurant. But mostly, we go to Ecolirios to stop moving. To listen to the river. To eat top-class food with the beauty of Costa Rica’s rainforest all around us. In many ways, a visit to Ecolirios feels like going home. And it’s always worth the time it takes to get there, whether you live an hour away, up the mountain in San José, or across the world.
