Atractions 18th, Nov 2024. Author: Isabel Cubero In the foothills, south of Guápiles and Guácimo, lies the Zona Protectora los Acuíferos de Pococí y Guácimo, created in 1987 to protect valuable and fragile forest systems, rivers, waterfalls, and more than fifty springs. These two forested areas become the core zone of the 25,898-hectare Aquifer Biological Corridor, whose main attractions are the rivers that flow through its territory and lush tropical forests. To promote the harmonious utilization of land within this region, the establishment of the ‘Ruta del Agua’ (Water Route) was initiated in 2019. This organization, comprising over 40 enterprises distributed across 12 communities, encompasses all territories situated south of Route 32. This route extends from the Costa Rica River in the Guápiles district of the Pococí canton to La Argentina in the Pocora district of the Guácimo canton. Within this extensive area, located on the slopes of the Turrialba volcano, a tourism initiative has been developed that is grounded in community-based rural tourism and ecotourism models. This offer encompasses a range of activities, including guided tours of integrated farms featuring crops such as coffee, as well as a comprehensive cocoa and chocolate experience. Participants will engage in farm animal management practices and organic farming techniques. Additionally, opportunities for hiking are available, which include excursions to rivers and waterfalls. Guests can also enjoy the serene activity of bird and plant observation within a botanical garden. Furthermore, this experience allows visitors to familiarize themselves with the local culture through the tasting of traditional cuisine in various restaurants. Also included is the experience of recreational tilapia fishing and the acquisition of handicrafts developed by local artisans. Sleeping lulled by frogs, leaving stress behind in a pool, breathing pristine air, observing birds such as toucans and even macaws, or waking up at dawn to the song of hundreds of birds and the fresh mountain air are all part of a unique experience that allows humans to get in touch with nature. Water resource management plays a crucial role in Ecolirios’s operations. Situated within one of the country’s most significant water corridors, the hotel benefits from a favorable climate of regular rainfall. This consistent precipitation supports the lush tropical forests in the area, which are the source of numerous natural springs, contributing to the region’s rich biodiversity and water supply. One of the primary attractions in this region is the opportunity to visit three of the most picturesque waterfalls in Costa Rica: the Dos Novillos Waterfall, the Rio Blanco Waterfall, and the Chindama Waterfall. These destinations are distinguished by their suitability for trekking and nature enthusiasts. It is advisable to undertake these treks during the summer months, as this period is characterized by the swelling of the rivers and an increased volume of water that flows through these natural features.
